ABOUT THIS ESSENTIAL CLASS
Learn from some of TV's top Music Supervisors, Publishers, and Songwriter/Producers all about how to write, prepare, approach, pitch, and license songs to television, commercials, film, games, and more. In this unique interactive class, learn from the other side of the desk about how best to build the catalog, relationships, and business acumen to place your songs in the various media.
Class will include
- a thorough overview of the world of sync licensing, from the creative to the business
- multiple listening and feedback sessions with some of the following: music supervisors, producers, and accomplished/placed artists.
- multiple opportunities to submit for live briefs
- a virtual "writing camp" on multiple briefs for a licensing opportunity through a partnership with BMG publishing. In this camp, you'll both get to co-write with class members and, if you choose, submit music you create on your own.
- a session with a music business attorney with a resume of more than 150 top 10 songs or albums to answer all your questions on the business of music (and not just sync)
- gain insight on your own music from producers with extensive success and experience in all aspects of sync
-
assignments designed to help you write and re-write for film, tv, games, and commercials and to help you gain clarity about the role of sync in the creative focus and the business of your music
- each week's class meets live over Zoom with the chance to ask questions of the guests in real time--not simply pre-recorded videos you watch.
- full archives of each week's class are available for your review at a private class site. At that site will be links to all live briefs and submission opportunities, as well as a platform to communicate with class members.

THIS CLASS IS FOR ME IF I...
- am a songwriter or producer looking for various opportunities for my music
- have always wanted my music on television
- keep hearing that my songs "would be perfect for tv" but don't know where to start
- want to understand all about how licensing works, how to prepare paperwork, rights, etc
- have a home studio and know there must be opportunities waiting for me
- or...I am not a songwriter but want to learn the business of music supervision from this unique three-dimensional perspective. Two alumna of this class have gone on to respected positions in music supervision directly as a result of this class.
ON PROMISE, PURPOSE, & GOOD FAITH
The purpose of the class has a few aspects.
-
to teach you all about the creative, business, and legal aspects of licensing songs to tv, film, commercials, games, and other media
-
to allow you to learn from experts in both the creative and business sides, first-hand, and to be able to ask questions and in some cases get their input on your music
-
to provide you with opportunities to both pitch existing catalog and create new works for specific listings for music supervisors, sync agents, and certain music libraries
-
to help you pose and answer questions about yourself, your music, your skills, your growth opportunities, your ideal collaborators, and your specific goals so that you are equipped to plot an informed path in sync that makes sense for you
The sync landscape is crowded with talented, experienced, and accomplished people. It's a tough business, no matter what your social media feed might suggest. While many of our students have enjoyed significant successes in sync as a result of their involvement in the class, what The Songwriting School cannot and would not promise is that taking the class ensures that you will land a placement or a sync deal. We can't even promise that you will find your ideal collaborator, though you're likely to meet and create with some strong candidates. The Songwriting School cannot promise your success--we can only equip you with understanding, opportunity, guidance, and relationships.
We can promise that in this class...
-
you will meet and learn from thoughtful experts in the sync licensing field on all sides of a placement, from music supervisors who choose and license the music to sync agencies who broker deals to accomplished writer/producers in the space, with perspective from a music business attorney and the chance to ask the attorney your specific questions.
-
you will meet fellow creatives in a positive, inclusive, supportive environment
-
you will have opportunities to submit your own music to music supervisors, sync agencies, and libraries
-
you will have the opportunity to create new music for live briefs from music supervisors and sync agencies, on your own and, if you choose, in collaboration
-
you will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers in a Writing Camp on a live brief AND receive input from the very music supervisors you're pitching to
